“My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to, Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small, You never need to carry more than you can hold, And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to, I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too, Yeah, this, is my wish…….”~Rascal Flatts
Spring mini sessions are one of my favorite times of the year! I always do two dates and April’s sessions did not disappoint. In the past I’ve gone for bold and colorful but this year I went a different direction and incorporated natural elements which have become more my style lately. I can’t wait for next weekend for the second day of sessions! Thank you to all the families who continue to trust me to capture your stories.
“You ask me what I like about Texas, I tell you it’s the wide open spaces! It’s everything between the Sabine and the Rio Grande. It’s the Llano Estacado, it’s the Brazos and the Colorado; Spirit of the people down here who share this land! It’s another burrito, it’s a cold Lone Star in my hand, it’s a quarter for the jukebox, boys. Play the sons of the mothers of the bunkhouse band!” ~Gary P. Nunn
For those of you don’t know me, I grew up in Texas. If you know any Texans, you know that we are all obnoxious about how amazing our state is. Sure, I love the Mississippi Delta and this is my home now but you know what they say…. You can take the girl out of Texas but you can’t take the Texas out of the girl. A few weeks ago I got to travel to my home state to visit friends and family. We stayed with one of my closest friends and my daughter’s godmother. While we were there we had an afternoon to just drive around a ranch and enjoy the outdoors. I took it as an opportunity to do a long overdue photoshoot with my daughter. Maggie Mae got to meet her first horse, we watched the cows, we ate dewberries straight off the vine, we picked wildflowers, and we explored an abandoned barn. It was perfect in every way.
“I am unwritten, can’t read my mind, I’m undefined, I’m just beginning. The pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned. Staring at the blank page before you, open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find. Reaching for something in the distance, so close you can almost taste it. Release your inhibitions, feel the rain on your skin. No one else can feel it for you only you can let it in….”~Natasha Bedingfield
If you have been a client of mine for the past six months, this young lady may look familiar. Asia is my right hand woman, she’s the oil that keeps my business machine working. I can’t even begin to describe how her working for me has helped lift a huge weight off my shoulders. She’s graduating and leaving me this summer and I’m so sad about it but happy for her future. She’s a smart, amazing woman and I can’t wait to see where life takes her!
“Stuff that works, stuff that holds up , the kind of stuff you don’ hang on the wall. Stuff that’s real, stuff you feel , the kind of stuff you reach for when you fall…….”~Guy Clark
Six months never seems like a long time until you meet a baby. In 6 months, they change so much they are almost unrecognizable. The first year for a child is such a big deal. They grow from this lump of clay into walking, talking human beings with amazing personalities. That’s just what happened with Tucker. I last saw him for his 6 month pictures and when I saw a couple weeks ago I was blown away by how much he had grown and how much personality he has now.
This session has all of my favorite things- nature, amazing sunlight, and a beautiful family. This may very well be one of my all time favorite sessions. Enjoy!
“You know I hope and I pray that you believe me when I say this love will never fade away. Oh, because you are the best thing, you are the best thing, you are the best thing to ever happened to me…..” ~Ray LaMontagne
I’m so honored to be able to capture such a special milestone in the lives of these two people. Margaret’s family is truly like my own delta family and I can’t wait to shower her baby with the same kindness her family has shown my own daughter. Welcome to the world little Lidewij de Koning!
“We got everything we need right here and everything we need is enough. Just so easy when the whole world fits inside of your arms. Do we really need to pay attention to the alarm? Wake up slow.…..”~Jack Johnson
There’s a famous quote that says “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Last year I spent every week documenting my family with my camera and capturing my little girl’s life through my lens. At the end of the year I made this gorgeous book of our year together as a family and it really made me cry looking at the images (it still does). At that moment I decided that I wanted to do this for other families on a smaller scale. I wanted to capture life as they are living it now to freeze these little moments so that when their kids are grown these memories will never fade. So I started offering documentary Story of Us sessions.
The Hawthorne family is my first family to do one of these 4 hour sessions this year and it has completely reinforced that I have found my calling. This is what I was meant to do-to document people’s lives whether it’s their family just hanging out in their pj’s or a wedding.
I welcome you to take a look at their story. Their family spending a Saturday morning doing exactly what they always do and it’s absolutely perfect and beautiful.
“Isn’t she lovely. isn’t she wonderful. Isn’t she precious………”~Stevie Wonder
I had the best time hanging out with Emory and her mom, Amanda, a few weeks ago. Rarely do I get to do shoots with 3 month olds and I must say it was a lot of fun! Babies this age are awake and starting to interact with the world more. Smiles are hard to come by but once you get one- it’s so worth it!! I can not wait for our next session in a few months!!
“You are my home wherever you go. Anywhere you stand is my piece of land. You are my home…..”~Amanda Shires
Meredith and Richard are just one of those couples who seem like they have already been married for years…in a totally good way. They are just natural around each other and so relaxed that if you had to guess you’d think they had been together forever and a day. I had so much fun doing their engagements and they have two gorgeous kids so we did some family shots as well (previewed at the end of the post)!
I can not wait for their May wedding!!
“I get to come home to you….”~John Michael Montgomery
I’ve said this a hundred times and I’ll say it again, the absolute best part of my job is watching people’s kids grow up. I met up with the Jones family to capture Ethan’s 1 year milestone and I just can’t get over how grown up his brother Elliot is now! It’s fascinating to me how kids grow into little people with amazing and unique personalities. Thank you Jones family for trusting me the last couple years to document your lives.
“Lazy yellow moon comin’ up tonight shinin’ through the trees. Crickets are singin’ and lightning bugs are floatin’ on the breeze. Baby get ready….”~Nitty Gritty Dirty Band
What do you do when your work for the weekend get rescheduled? You go on an adventure! Last weekend we went on a spur of the moment camping and hiking trip. In another life, my husband and I used to pick up and go camping fairly often but since the birth of Maggie Mae we haven’t been able to do it as much for various reasons. One of my goals for 2017 is to make more memories for myself and to make time for the things that bring me joy. When Maggie Mae was 9 months old we took her hiking in Big Bend National Park and we had a blast. We bought the pack/carrier you see in these pictures and it hasn’t been touched since then. So when my husband suggested we use these two unexpected free days to go outdoors, I figured there was no time like the present.
With just one night to spare, we did not want to drive far but as everyone in the Mississippi Delta knows, there’s not much hiking around here. We saw a state park called Cane Creek on the Arkansas map that was about an hour and a half away so we decided to give that a try. It had everything we wanted and it was close enough that if the night was a total disaster we could pack up and come home. We all know that doing new things with toddlers can turn out really great or really awful. Turns out, camping with a toddler is pretty freakin awesome. Was it a lot of hassle? Yes. Was it a huge headache? Absolutely. Did I find myself annoyed more than I should have been? Of course. But man, she was so excited about the tent and being outside and so enamored all of the wonders of the outdoors that it made every annoyance worth it.
If you feel like you’ve lost yourself in your children and your day to day life there’s no time like the present to include your kids in the things you love and the things that make you happy. I promise it will be worth it in the end. And I really think the more often you do those things, the easier it’s going to get! Go find your adventure!!
